  • Wireless Access At The Library

This wireless system is provided by grants from Optimum Online Internet, The Community Development Association of New Jersey and The Friends of the Free Public Library of Hasbrouck Heights Endowment Fund.

    • What is wireless?

      • Wireless Internet access uses radio frequency signals to exchange information between your computer and the Internet.

      • No cables are required.

    • Why wireless?

      • Wireless allows library users to bring their own computers to the library, or borrow laptops for use in the library and to get Internet access.

      • Library users can use their wireless laptop computers or PDAs to get Internet access at most areas in the Library. You are not limited to the normal computer areas of the libraries. If the signal is not strong enough, move to another part of The Library and try signing on again.

    • How do I use wireless at the library?

      • You will need to bring your own laptop computer to the library or borrow a laptop from the Library for in-library use. Library laptops have WiFi cards installed in them. You will need to install a WiFi network card in your own laptop if it is not already equipped with one.  The Library does not provide wireless cards.

      • Most WiFi equipment will be compatible. However, the library can make no guarantees as to compatibility of your equipment with the library's network.

      • Printers are not available to wireless users in the library at this time. However, you can purchase a CD at any of the service desks for $1, save your information to it, then sign on to a PC that has a printer attached to it.

      • The Library Laptops are equipped with Deep Freeze, a program that will erase all but the original settings and will delete any files or information that you have entered in the computer.

    • Will I need any special settings or passwords to connect?

      • No, the library's patron wireless network is open to all visitors.

      • No special encryption settings, user names, nor passwords are required.

    • When I access your remote databases, will I have to provide a Library Card?

      • Yes - BCCLS database access on laptops will require your BCCLS library card number.

    • Do the general rules about computer use still apply if I am using my own laptop?

      • Yes – any activities deemed illegal apply to you whether or not you are on a Library-owned computer or your own computer.  Any illegal activity will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

    • Can the library help me configure my computer?

      • No - everyone's computer is different and you are responsible for knowing how to configure your own equipment.

      • The Free Public Library of Hasbrouck Heights cannot be responsible for any changes you make to your computer's settings.

      •  If you need additional assistance, you may need to contact the manufacturers of your hardware or software.  The Library Staff cannot provide any help beyond this FAQ page.

    • What about virus protection and security?

      •  It is solely the responsibility of the wireless device owner/user to provide anti-virus protection, and to configure their laptop/PDA settings to provide the appropriate security settings to control access from other wireless devices within the Library and the internet itself.  The Library laptops are not secured systems! The Free Public Library of Hasbrouck Heights cannot and will not take responsibility for damages incurred for incorrect, insufficient or incomplete security settings; or lack of adequate or up-to-date virus protection.  Wireless users assume all risks in this regard.

    • What hours is wireless access available?

      • Wireless access is available all library hours.

  • Rules for Borrowing Wireless Laptops

    • Borrower must be 18 years or older to borrow DVDs.

    • Any adult with photo ID is eligible to sign out a Library Laptop for in-library use.

    • Children ages 8 through 17 can only sign out a Library Laptop if a parent or guardian has signed a release form indicating that parent or guardian understands they will be financially liable for any damage to the Library Laptop.  This will be kept on file in the Library. The children must present their Library Card which will be checked for Laptop privileges in their BCCLS record.

    • Laptops will be checked upon each return, and before checking out to the next patron for damage to the computer or programs.

    • A receipt will be given when the Library Laptop is returned in good condition.

    • The Library Laptops will be given on a first come, first served basis and cannot be reserved.

    • Use of the Library Laptop is limited to one hour. The patron must bring the computer back to the Circulation Desk at the end of the hour. Failure to do so will result in the patron’s computer privileges being suspended immediately and/or in the future.  If no one is waiting, they may sign on for another hour.
